Knocking noises when driving or steering
- Wear in the tie rod outer joint
- Corrosion / water ingress due to damaged sealing bellows on joint
-> caused e.g. by cracks, animal bites, high pressure cleaners
Check wear of tie rod outer joint using the following procedure.
1. Check sealing bellows on joint for damage. Sealing bellows damaged: Replace outer joint => Not considered W&G damage!
2. Move the outer joint around multiple times with circular movements of the ball pin
3. Hold the outer joint horizontal on the housing and move the ball pin out to the end stop then release it:
- If there is still friction in the joint of the ball pin and it prevents the ball pin from returning => the joint or play is OK (see video 001)
- If the ball pin is moved quickly back toward the center of the joint by the return forces of the sealing bellows => the play of the joint is not OK (see video 002) => replace the tie rod outer joint
