Symptom: Oil trace can be noticed at engine and transmission bottom.
Reason
:To support Engine Oil leak investigation. Determine whether the leaked oil is from engine. Find leak location and severity. Diagnose the fault and prevent the replacement of unnecessary parts, hereby release this SSM, requiring dealers to investigate the problem according to the SSM guidance when investigating the oil stain on the bottom of the joint of the engine and the gearbox.
Customer may complain following malfunction:
Oil trace can be noticed at engine and transmission bottom. Oil pool exists on Bottom cover.
Dealer follows below inspection flow:
1.Preparation and Visual check.
1.1 Check the engine oil level is between the lowest and maximum limit on dipstick. Raise TA if oil level is not in the limit. If oil level is OK, go to step 1.2.
1.2 Drive the vehicle to the ramp. Remove the engine and / or transmission undershield(s) to gain access to the engine and transmission mating area. Take pictures and record the oil leak status of Engine Bay Cover and Engine & transmission bottom.
1.3 Check and take photos of surrounding area: Timing Observe Cap, Cylinder block &Oil sump contact face, Transmission area. If the leaked oil is from these areas, repair according to related procedure defined in TOPIX. If no leak point found, go to step 1.4.
1.4 If slight surface oil dampness without drops at engine & transmission bottom and no Oil pool on engine bay cover are acceptable and should not be repaired as a leak. Detail refer to Picture1.Otherwise, go to step 1.5.
1.5 Dis-mount Starter. Check and take photos of Torque Convertor chamber.(Between Engine Rear Cover & Transmission); Detail refer to Picture2. If the leaked oil is not from rear seal, Repair according to related procedure defined in TOPIX. If oil leak from Crankshaft Rear seal area, go to step 1.6.
1.6 If vehicle mileage less than 10,000km, release the vehicle. When vehicle mileage reached 10,000km. Regularly invite customer after vehicle mileage reached 10,000km. If oil leak still exist,re-check from 1.1 and then go to step 2 to clean.
2. Clean.
Clean the mating faces of the engine and transmission using a suitable degreaser. Make sure to clean the inner area through Breath holes and Starter hole. Blow and clean the all the sprayed area with Compress Air. Detail refer to Picture3.
NOTES:
- Make sure clean off any oil residue that may have seeped underneath.
- Make sure that the degreaser is sprayed into the breather holes between the mating faces to make sure the inside of the transmission housing is clean.
- Make sure the undershield(s) are cleaned of any oil residue.
- The inner corner between Rear Cover and Transmission should also be cleaned. No oil or cleaning fluid residual allowed. Flexible pipe can be used to access this area from Starter hole.
- After clean, take pictures of Engine Bay cover, Engine & transmission bottom, torque convertor housing(use endoscope).
3. Checking and judgement.
- Release the car after clean.
- If customer complain oil leak still exist after more than 1000km running, confirm the oil leak status according to step1.2. Then raise TA.
- Followed supporting document needed to Raise TA:
Customer complain 1st time:
- Video before clean: Engine and transmission bottom area oil trace; Engine bottom tray oil trace; VIN number; Mileage reached 10000km.
- Pictures before clean: No oil trace at timing observe hole; oil trace at torque converter housing inner bottom area; Oil trace at rear seal seat area.
- Video after clean: No oil trace at engine and transmission bottom area; No oil trace at engine bottom tray; VIN number; Mileage.
- Pictures after clean: No oil trace at torque converter housing inner bottom area; No oil trace at rear seal seat area.
Oil leak again after deep clean:
- Video before clean: Engine and transmission bottom area oil trace; Engine bottom tray oil trace; VIN number; Mileage.
- Pictures before clean: No oil trace at timing observe hole; oil trace at torque converter housing inner bottom area; Oil trace at rear seal seat area.
